Trinidad
It took nearly 30 years for the Trinidad brand to be available to the general public. Now that it is, it's become among the most prominent brands, and its portfolio has expanded tremendously.
Trinidad was created in 1969 but - like Cohiba - was initially designed purely for the use of Fidel Castro and as diplomatic gifts. Like Cohiba, Trinidad was initially made solely at the famed El Laguito factory with some of the highest quality Cuban tobacco, and with the added stylistic touch of a pigtail cap.
It was only in 1998 that the Trinidad brand was available for sale, and initially as just the Lancero-sized Fundadores. The initial markets - after Cuba itself - were Canada and Mexico, with worldwide distribution added later. In 2003, more sizes were introduced, including the Reyes, Coloniales and Robusto Extra. Since then, several more sizes has appeared, including the Vigia in 2014 and the Media Luna, Esmerelda, and Topes five years later. As Trinidad has shifted from almost exclusive production of slender ring gauge cigars to Robusto and Robusto Extra sizes, and the popularity of Trinidad has risen accordingly.
Although Trinidad cigars do not receive the third fermentation process that Cohiba cigars do, nor do they offer blends as elite as the Behike or Maduro 5, Trinidad is widely considered a suitable alternative to Cohiba in terms of the quality of tobacco used. All Trinidad cigars are hand-rolled, and all tobacco is sourced from the prestigious Vuelta Abajo region in the province of Pinar del Rio in Cuba.
