Romeo y Julieta
In terms of global popularity, Cuba's Romeo Y Julieta brand is rivalled only by Montecristo and their flagship brand, Cohiba. While Montecristo has been tops in
terms of worldwide sales in the 21st century - accounting for roughly 25 percent of all Cuban cigar sales - Romeo Y Julieta has routinely been in second place,
at around 15 percent.
Established in 1875, the brand quickly made a name for itself by winning several gold medals in tasting exhibitions from 1885 to 1900. An aggressive marketing
campaign throughout Europe and the Americas in the early 20th century helped establish Romeo Y Julieta as a commercial success as well.
Among the enthusiasts of the brand was eventual UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who favoured a seven inch long vitola dubbed the Julieta No.2. After a visit to Cuba in 1946 during which Churchill professed his admiration for the brand, the Julieta No.2 was re-named the Churchill. This was the genesis of Romeo's most popular series to this day.
Sixty years after the re-branding of the Churchill, Cuba released a robusto size in the series, the Short Churchill. The Wide Churchill followed in 2010, and the
release of the Petit Churchill in 2012 brought the number of vitolas in the series to four.
In addition to the Churchill series, the Romeo brand specializes in smaller Panetelas and Petit Corona sizes. Vitolas like the Mille Fleurs, Belvederes, and
Regalias de Londres offer mild 30 to 45 minute cigars for the novice smoker.
