Although it is very frequently found in some of the most popular pipe tobacco blends, Virginia is also one of the few varieties that can be smoked on its own. Much of the reason for this is that it’s among the most complex tobacco varieties; Virginia’s very high sugar content results in a natural sweetness that arises without having to case or top-coat the tobacco with artificial sweetening agents.
When choosing a Virginia tobacco to smoke, the best practice is to choose one that has undergone an aging process, as young Virginia can burn very hot and cause tongue bite. A smoker can also age it themselves, and due to the high sugar content Virginia tobacco ages naturally well provided it is stored properly, in an airtight container or pouch. Since Virginia is typically aged before being shipped to market, though, it’s often ready to be enjoyed immediately.
